Tearlach,
Thank you for doing battle on my behalf on Imbas.
Eight years ago I left a comfortable arts administration job as a folk and roots festival artistic director to pursue a life long dream. My dream was to preserve and nurture the Gaelic language and culture of my small part of the world here in Huron Township, Ontario. I was blessed with a wonderful childhood filled with Gaelic song and stories related to me by my great aunts, grandfather and other members of this remarkable Highland community. I have spent nearly a decade now trying preserve and promote the Lewis Settlment here so that it's heritage, cultue and folklore are not lost forever. I am not some kind of commercial hack - just a person who is trying to ensure that something truly wonderful is not lost forever. I have spent my time interviewing oldtimers, collecting songs and stories and documenting what remains of the areas one rich heritage. I have used my book and CD to try and publisise this community and its heritage. Neither are money makers. In fact I am in up to my eyeballs as in debt as is my mother who mortgaged her house to help support my activities here. I have chosen a lonely path but I believe it is worth it!
If anyone doubts my motivation or intentions I suggest they read the bio and Silent Ones Section of my website located at http://www.torquil.net/ And by the way, I am not trying to induce any one to buy anything!!
As a small publisher/recording label I find it ridiculous that a little self promotion on my part is lumped in with Viagara spammers. The Celtic community is relatively small, I think it might be useful if we tried supporting our each
Thanks again.

If previous commentors had bothered to read the Imbas list rules instead of spouting self important but factually-lite nonsense, they would have nioticed that debate on a book is of course on topic and that further, authors of books who contribute in any way (including starting discussions of their books) are of course still on topic.
The sole thing that changed is that posting *ony* adverts, with no other participation, is now against the list rules. Which is fair enough, frankly.

Reposting here what I posted on the list itself.
Since this seems to have struck a nerve with a number of people:
We're in no way opposed to people posting information about new books. I
think I can speak for the list moderators as a whole here in saying that
what we are opposed to is the practice of "drive-by e-mail carpet bombing"
where someone isn't involved other than to periodically trumpet some item
or event on as many lists as possible while remaining a non-participant in
other matters.
I know we have several authors kicking about here. Bless you all. We want
to see and hear about your work. We'd rather that you make it personal by
discussing it with us rather than just issuing the broadside announcing
its release.
Perhaps now we can let the little spat go away and get on with discussing
non-administrative manners, even, perhaps the Leodhais diaspora in Canada?
Leis a-h'uile beannachd,

Tearlach, are you a member of Imbas at all? Looking at the Imbas-members list, I don't see you on it, just the Imbas-public one.
If you're going to continue to rail about the organization, it'd be appreciated if you'd make the distinction. The organization is not the public list, of which you are a member.

No, I'm not a member of Imbas proper. I am a member of its public egroup list as you correctly state and it is the current condition of that membership to which I allude. I approached you about joining Imbas in a November 2004 email, and was told membership was suspended for the time being because of re-organization. Of course, whether I am a member of Imbas or just the public list is irrelevant to my rail, which is not personal, BTW. I hope the clarification is appreciated
.
Now...how about admitting you and your list police over-reacted and lighten up when deciding whether to punish a poster who hawks his book relating to Celtic culture and traditions?

Nantonos, we did read the rules. Perhaps you didn't read the gripes before your ad hominem post.
Angus didn't violate the rules. He pissed off the moderators when posted his product without discussing it. They changed the rules because they didn't appreciate the post.
We don't appreciate the change, and "frankly" disagree with you.

Come on, "Ed", lets not get personal...stick to the issue...some people are confident enough in their positions to handle dissent and differences of opionion, others aren't.
They clarrified the fuzzy rule, which is all I wanted, regardless of what any body sez. Vanya needed his pound of flesh, so I'll gladly contribute if it allows him to save face and move on.
And in the future, the moderators will be more careful before they compare a poster like Angus to ******

Hey people this is my first post and these forums are rather awkquard to get around(I presume im posting on the thread about the Cd's and community promotion) but 99% of the stuff I have read is about the legality of posting and then answers about knee-jerk rules and anti-spasms.
From what I picked up from the main site this is meant to be a debate forum about celtic history, myths, lore and language etc. etc. so far i havent seen anything on that. Why dont we cut the B*** (is ''swearing'' allowed here?)and talk about the fianna and the come-back of the celtic languages etc etc? unless im in the complete wrong part of the forums, but its hard trying to find a decent celtic culture debate forum on the web and i just want to find somewhere I can learn about the welsh side of me(im half-english, half-welsh, from Liverpool)
