CR FAQ dismisses "A Handbook of the Scottish Gaelic World" writer as racist and misogynist

music: Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - Traffic
mood: Somber

bangin (3k image)As we continue exploring the CR FAQ that went "live" last week, we notice another noted Celtic scholar's work being marginalized. Michael Newton's "A Handbook of the Scottish Gaelic World", a gem that takes one into the realm of Scottish Gaelic culture is the latest work to catch flack from our CR elders Kathryn Price NicDhna and Erynn Rowan Laurie, though on this one, according to Laurie on the Imbas Public list tonight, the objections are all NicDhana.

NicDhana accuses Newton

New CR FAQ dismisses Alexei Kondratiev's "The Apple Branch" as Misleading

music: Bite the Hand that Feeds - Nine Inch Nails
mood: Shock and awed

bangin (3k image)It is a difficult task to create a religious umbrella based on a pre-Christian ancient culture. It's even more difficult to develop a FAQ which all associated with the umbrella will agree upon when that ancient culture is Celtic. The men and women attempting this task over at CR R Live Journal deserve praise for their efforts and their emerging product, which in many parts has become quite an informative body of work.

The new CR FAQ is now on-line: http://www.paganachd.com/faq/index.html

The authorship of the FAQ is claimed by Kathryn Price NicDhna and Erynn Rowan Laurie. Most of the 10 or so CR's directly associated with this project are Americans, not fluent in Celtic languages, and, for the most part, unlettered with scholarly degrees in Celtic studies. So when the section of the FAQ relating to reading list came out, I was particularly saddened

An Evening with Taranus

music: God of Thunder - KISS
mood: Exhilarated

TaranisSm (10k image)Traveling to New Orleans this week, I left the squalls of Tropical Storm Alberto behind in the Florida Gulf coast. A hot, humid day in the Big Easy with a 0% chance of rain set the stage for a record high of 96. As the setting sun painted its departing masterpiece on the few clouds that lingered, I relaxed after work with a fine cigar while enjoying the view.

In the twilight remaining, a distant rumble gathered my attention. Gazing to the north,

CR: A Celtic Religion, A Celtic Culture, or an American Neo-Pagan Creation?

music: You - Candlebox
mood: Upbeat

plain Some members of the CR/R group Live Journal are in the process of putting together a FAQ on
Celtic Reconstructionism (CR). Watching the hard work and effort put forth over the last few months has been an interesting past time for me. Since I (and they by their definitions) don't consider myself a practicioner of their CR religion as they call it, I have stayed on the sidelines and watched as they painstakenly put this project together piece by piece. Some of the work is nothing short of excellent.

Surfing through the beta version of the FAQ, I came upon
